I’ve been a science writer and editor for almost 20 years. As editor of The Volunteer Monitor newsletter since 1990, I’ve worked with hundreds of article-writers from environmental organizations and agencies. I created the “Writing to Be Read” and “The Sudden Editor” workshops to share the writing and editing advice that has helped me the most.

Before beginning my writing and editing career, I worked as a microbiologist in hospital and research labs, and as a microbiology instructor at San Francisco State University.

I’m sometimes available for freelance work as a writer, editor, or consultant. Below are a few samples of my work. I’m happy to send out a complete resume and list of publications on request.

• An Overview of Narragansett Bay. pages 1-5; pages 6-8. Rhode Island Sea Grant.

• Shrinking Ice, Starving Penguins. Marituentas magazine, Pew Fellowship Program in Marine Conservation.

• Over 50 articles in The Volunteer Monitor newsletter. Here are a couple of examples:
   - “Friends of Deer Creek: Rigorous Science, Remarkable Volunteers.” Vol. 17 No. 2, see pages 12-13.
   - “Bacteria Methods for Recreational Waters.” Vol. 18, No. 1, see pages 8-12.
