The Sudden Editor

Return to homepage

A “sudden editor” is a person who has never studied editing, never planned on being an editor, isn’t entirely sure what editors do, yet somehow has been put in charge of editing his or her organization’s quarterly newsletter and annual report.

The world of environmental organizations and environmental agencies is full of people who have been recruited to edit something because they “like to write” or “have good grammar.” Unfortunately, editing involves a lot of specialized knowledge not covered in English class. Inevitably, people without training in editing make amateurish mistakes that undermine their organization’s credibility.

This workshop is designed to rescue sudden editors. It takes a triage approach, focusing on the most common pitfalls. Special attention is given to editing problems encountered in environment-related publications.

 Topics include:
◊ What editors do
◊ Why you need a style manual and how to choose one
◊ Answers to common copyediting questions
◊ Revising other people’s writing (while staying friends)
◊ Simple layout principles
